Coffee. It’s the achilles heel of 99% of the population. Ok, I’m totally making that number up, but no one can argue that it’s got a strong grip on much of the civilized world, bringing many to their knees if this morning ritual is missed.
No one can argue that coffee does indeed, have a plethora of health benefits, ranging from improving Type 2 Diabetes, preventing Parkinsons Disease, and protecting against colorectal cancer. On the flip side, it’s also been linked to all kinds negative health effects, from increasing the risk of cancer, worsening digestive issues, and the potential to develop heart disease.(source)
Rcently, I talked about the coffee controversy, 7 reasons why you should consider quitting it, and how to do so. Read that here.
Now it’s time to blow your mind with a delicious, satisfying, detoxifying, and metabolism-boosting alternative to your morning joe. Yes, you read that right.
DELICIOUS.
This concoction was inspired by the ladies and gents in my recent Superwoman Slim Down (Real Food) Detox & Cleanse and my adoration for the occasional cup of decaf Bulletproof® coffee. You see, part of this amazing and life-changing program is to eliminate trigger foods that make us sick, fat, inflamed, and exhausted. Coffee is one such food. The good news is I’m able to redeem myself once participants transform their bodies and lives as a result of the program (phew!).
Here’s what makes this coffee alternative so darn healthy:
1. Dandelion root
Dandelion is loaded with trace minerals and potassium, iron, and calcium. It is also an excellent liver tonic and blood purifier, and one of the best diuretics, complete with its own potassium source. As it that weren’t enough, it helps to regulate digestion, aids in weight loss, lowers serum cholesterol and blood pressure, and improve acne. Read more about this amazing superfood here.
2. Raw cacao
The mother ship of chocolate, cacao is probably one of the most nutrient and antioxidant-dense foods on the planet. Cacao is rich in vitamins and minerals, and has been shown to promote blood circulation, stimulate digestive enzymes, suppress appetite, and regulate blood sugar. It is also high in magnesium, which aids in over 300 biochemical reactions in the body, including metabolism. The key to remember here is cacao (the raw completely natural and unprocessed form of chocolate) is the superhero – not the processed bar that you’re buying at the store.
3. Coconut oil
A rich source of healthy fats that has been linked to enhanced metabolism, immune system, and blood sugar stabilization, among other things. I’ve spoken at length about my love affair with coconut oil before. Read that rant here.
4. Coconut milk
Ditto to the above homage to coconut oil in all of its rich, metabolism-boosting glory.
Can I get an amen?
Not a fan of chocolate? No problem. The sky is the limit with the flavoring possibilities and still keep this Superwoman Slim Down–approved.
Coffee Flavoring Ideas:
- Pumpkin Pie Spiced Latte: Swap out raw cacao for 1 tsp. organic pumpkin pie spice (buy here)
- Gingerbread Latte: Swap out raw cacao for 1 tsp. homemade gingerbread spice mix (get the recipe from Stupid Easy Paleo here)
- French Vanilla: Swap out raw cacao for 1-2 {split and scraped} organic vanilla beans (buy here)
- Chocolate Mint: Add a drop of Therapeutic-Grade Peppermint Essential Oil (this is the only brand of essential oil I’d ever ingest – quality matters, folks!). Peppermint Essential Oil not only makes it taste AMAZING, but is also a great way to support healthy digestion.
