I do. BIG time. I’m constantly second guessing my decisions and weighing all the options, wasting my precious time and energy on whether it was the “right” choice. It drives me (and my husband) crazy.
In fact, there’s been a lot of attention devoted lately to the phenomenon of “decision fatigue”, the deteriorating quality of decisions made by a person, after a long session of decision making. In the most simplistic terms, we expend **so** much time and energy deciding what to wear, what to eat, or what movie to see, that we leave nothing in the reserves for the bigger decisions that can have a profound impact on the quality of our lives.
Let me break it down for you…
Decision fatigue has many effects – from the totally harmless (a bottle of red or white?) versus the more serious – making a major career change, deciding to have more children, or taking the plunge and buying that fancy timeshare in The Hamptons. Or worse, we may avoid making the decision at all.
Decision fatigue can also warp our judgement. It’s like getting drunk before dinner. You get lazy and hit the “f*ck it” button – opting for pizza and ice cream instead of making those healthy, homemade zoodles you saw in your Pinterest feed.
So what’s an ob-stresser to do?
Well, right out of the gate, cut the crap and eliminate trivial decisions in order to focus on bigger, more important ones. Some of the most successful people have already figured this out. Check it:
- President Obama limits his wardrobe to blue or grey suits, stating “I’m trying to pare down decisions. I don’t want to make decisions about what I’m eating or wearing. Because I have too many other decisions to make.”
- Steve Jobs always wore a black turtleneck with jeans and sneakers. Always.
- Albert Einstein had several variations of the same suit so that he wouldn’t have to waste time deciding what to wear each day.
- Ivanka Trump gives her kids only two options for breakfast, stating “we each have a finite supply of mental energy each day and seemingly mundane, ordinary decisions tap into that reserve. To avoid making a big decision out of breakfast, I always give the kids one of two choices.”
You can also take an even better approach by reprogramming the way you make decisions and transforming your life by using your intuition.
