For many years I struggled with my weight. I longed for simple things: to lose weight, keep it off, and not deprive myself of delicious food -- I didn’t think it was too much to ask.

    Counting Calories

    Calories work differently in the body depending on what type of food they come from. Foods rich in protein like chicken, eggs, or beans use a ton of energy to digest, whereas highly processed or sugary foods barely tax the system at all – meaning, your body isn’t burning calories to digest them.   Calorie counting in itself won’t tell you anything about the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients you’re getting, or lacking, in your diet. It’s about quality, not quantity. Counting calories is THEEE BIGGEST pain in the ass and it only helps in stressing you out. But that’s not even the worst part. As soon as you begin to restrict calories, your body goes into panic mode. It’s going to hold onto every single thing you put into your body for dear life – slowing your metabolism down and actually preventing you from losing weight. Long story short, calorie counting alone tells you diddly squat about how your body will react to different types foods. In reality, it’s about quality, not quantity. It’s for this reason that weight loss is not as simple as calories in and calories out.

    Cutting the Fat

    Fat is satiating, meaning it fills you up and leaves you feeling satisfied. This is the feeling that allows you to skip dessert or that extra helping of Mom’s lasagna. When you eat fats as part of your meal, they actually slow down your food absorption so that you can go longer without feeling hungry. You end up eating less because you’re satisfied, rather than being ravenous after your meal. In fact, there’s a fatty acid called CLA that is found in grass-fed beef and raw, full-fat dairy products from grass-fed cows, like butter, milk or cheese. Now, research shows that CLA is associated with reduced body fat and weight, which means that all these foods are mighty tasty AND contribute to a slimmer physique. Pretty cool, right?

    Obsessively Working Out

    It’s a common misconception that putting in the hours at the gym entitles you to eat whatever you want. Sure, it sounds like a perfect strategy to have your cake and -- literally -- eat it too, but the harsh reality is that most people out-eat their exercise efforts because they oversimplify the relationship between eating and exercise. Don’t get me wrong, the occasional indulgence is fine – we are human, after all. and eat a diet filled with whole, fresh, unprocessed foods for successful long-term weight-loss, and -- more importantly -- good health. While it is critical to exercise regularly, without the proper diet, you're wasting precious time on the elliptical trying to burn off last night’s pizza and beer-binge, when you could be doing things you actually ENJOY with the people you love.

    Replacing Your Meals With Processed “Diet” Foods And Drinks:

    There is a huge market for so-called “diet foods”. I get it. I’m as time-constrained as the next gal, but the convenience comes at a price that defeats the original purpose. These foods usually come with a long list of questionable ingredients and a suspicious shelf-life that lasts well beyond the length of most marriages. Real, whole, fresh ingredients are replaced with chemicals, sugar, salt, and other stabilizers that serve only to make the stuff palatable and keep you coming back for more. Sure, you might get some short term losses, but is this way of eating sustainable? No. Is it healthy? Double no. Can it wreak havoc on your health and metabolism in the long term? You bet.

    Juice Fasts

    Don’t get me wrong, I love to juice – you get a super-charged dose of nutrients in a very small package. And most of the time, it’s delicious. However, my love for juicing ends at programs where it’s the only thing you’re allowed to drink for days on end in an effort to “reboot” your system (and subsequently lose weight). Sure, you’re going to lose weight – how can you not? You’re taking in considerably fewer calories and actual food than before. The bottom line is, these kinds of detoxes do not serve long-term weight loss goals and at the end, they do more harm than good.

It’s clear from these myths that there’s a lot of misinformation out there about how to lose weight the right way. And it’s easy to see why.

Almost all of these “quick fix” methods are built around fake results: you lose a few quick pounds, and get short-term satisfaction -- but then gain it all back and you’re right back where you started, or worse.
